Rio the Red

This is Rio. He is predominantly Australian Cattle Dog, also known as a Queensland Heeler. We found him after an exhaustive
search with many northern California dog rescue agencies. All of us, including Jordan, went through training with him. He is eager
and willing to please. We have startedAgility training. It is a fun work-out for both of us and we'll see where it leads us.

He loves the trail, balls (which as far as he is concerned counts as anything that he can fit in his mouth and a person will throw) CHEESE, his people, chews and pats. His is very silly and very much the pup. He can really catches some air when he leaps.
I have begun to puzzle over the physics, or optical illusions, of hang-time while watching him fly.

Like many rescue dogs, he had been some bad places before he made his way into our lives. The kind and caring lady who
runs the rescue that he came from is Judy Wright up in Petaluma. She is an amazing lady doing some terrific work. He was so frightful when he first came to live with us but wanted so much to learn and do the right thing. He would not step paw into the kitchen and was in deep fear of flyswatters, magazines, and brooms.
Loud noises are still a problem for him but he has come so far!

We did a five-day backpacking trip with him one summer up in the Marble Mountains. He had a wonderful time for the most part but there was one day when he had it with the mileage and began an odd pacing of the trail. He would rush ahead, trotting, to the nearest patch of shade where he would lay flat and wait for us to catch up and pass him - this went on repeatedly. He is not a fan
of water but went in after us when we swam in the many fine mountain lakes.

We hope to get him a canine friend after the next move so he has a full-time companion. The Bozo-Cat just doesn't fill that role.
Rio is willing but the cat is simply not interested. Rio has picked up some badly translated cat speak from her. When he tries
to "play", crouching down wagging and such, she replies with a swat at him. He has now starting using that batting as a way to request play. This has extended to trying the same method on other dogs, who are utterly confused by this dog speaking cat and getting it all backwards.

*Rio has a new companion!
